Dear Albany Community,
We have made it to the last day of our first semester. Students are overjoyed to have a break, especially our high school students, who have finished their finals and can truly relax. The calendar changes made several years ago that shifted final examinations from mid-January to before December’s winter break have been a huge relief to high schoolers and appear to have positive effects on mental health.
This change necessitated starting school earlier in August. As we approach the final decision on the academic calendar for the 2024–25 school year, it is important to know that every aspect has been carefully considered.
California Dashboard & CAASPP Results
California keeps track of how all public schools are performing and publishes this data. Just today the state’s California Dashboard was updated with last year’s test results, graduation statistics, and measures of school climate. I encourage you to visit the site and examine in detail how Albany schools are doing.
If you are interested in our student’s academic achievement in aggregate and by subgroup, check out Senior Director Michelle Sinclair’s presentation (video and slides) at Tuesday’s Board meeting of the California Assessment of Student Progress and Performance (CAASPP). Although there are areas where we are striving to improve, I am proud of our students for their excellent achievement and of our teachers and school staff for helping them get there.
Albany Music Fund Needs Your Support
Recently I have acknowledged superior singers and musicians in our district. Our choir and band students benefit greatly from the support of Albany Music Fund, because the District’s budget is insufficient to provide for all the needs of these programs. Visit their Facebook page to see some video snippets of the wonderful recent concerts. If you are planning some year-end gifts, please consider Albany Music Fund. You may also want to remember your school (donations to schools are always welcome!), your school’s PTA, Albany Education Foundation, Albany Athletic Boosters, and SchoolCARE. AUSD achieves excellence because of the support we receive from families and organizations in our school community. Giving locally has impacts that you can see.
Winter Break Is Here!
All schools and offices will be closed from Dec. 18 – Jan. 1 for our winter break. I hope that your family is able to use this time to relax and recharge in preparation for the second half of the school year.

Hemos llegado al último día de nuestro primer semestre.
